UNIVERSITY BOTANICAL GARDEN in BALCIC is a unit managed by the University „Sf. Kliment Ohridski” in SOFIA, established in 1955 under the leadership of academician Prof. DAKI YORDANOV and contains over 4,600 plant species. This is part of the Architectural Complex of the former summer residence of QUEEN MARIA of ROMANIA, a cultural monument of national importance in BULGARIA. Today it covers a large part of the territory of the former royal residence, having the status of a protected area. Within the protected area, specialists and amateurs can observe the natural ecosystems and appreciate the rich biodiversity of the region. The GARDEN is also known for its large collection of cacti and succulents, exhibited in the open air, and is included in the 100 national tourist attractions of BULGARIA. In 2012 it opened its doors and a permanent exhibition covered with cacti and succulents, so that lovers of these prickly exotic plants can enjoy their colors and beauty all year round. Besides a beautiful corner of BULGARIA, BALCIC BOTANICAL GARDEN is a place for scientific research and activity, student practices, initiatives related to environmental education and art (Wikipedia). |
