The Musée d'Orsay is a museum on the left bank of the Seine, housed in the former railway station, the Gare d'Orsay, an impressive Beaux-Arts edifice built between 1898 and 1900.
L'église de la Madeleine, the Roman Catholic church was designed in its present form as a temple to the glory of Napoleon's army. To its east is the Place Vendôme. The original Vendôme Column at the center of the square was erected by Napoleon I to commemorate the battle of Austerlitz; it was torn down on 16 May 1871, by decree of the Paris Commune, but subsequently re-erected and remains a prominent feature on the square today.
The Palais Garnier house the Paris Opera since it was founded by Louis XIV in 1669. It was built on the orders of Napoleon III as part of the great Parisian reconstruction project carried out by Baron Haussmann.
The Galeries Lafayette is a French department store company.
