Catania is one of eight places recognized by UNESCO where the devastation wrought by a major earthquake in 1693 resulted in a massive public rebuilding program and the construction of fanciful late baroque palazzos, cathedrals, churches and other buildings.
In Piazza Stesicoro we can see the Monument to Vincenzo Bellini, and opposite, approximately 10 metres below street level, are the excavations of the ruins of the 2nd c. BC Roman Amphitheatre, built in lava stone faced with marble.
